Matanzas to Host Inaugural International Rumba Festival

The Cuban province of Matanzas is set to host the first edition of the Guaguancó Matancero International Rumba Festival, as announced during a press conference this Wednesday.

Sponsored by the legendary ensemble Los Muñequitos de Matanzas, the event—scheduled to run from April 23 to 26—aims primarily to strengthen and revitalize Afro-Cuban rhythms across the nation.

The festival’s program features a diverse lineup, including rumba groups from the western province alongside prominent national artists and performers from Peru.

Diosdado Ramos, president of the initiative, stated that organizing an event of this magnitude despite the complex circumstances currently facing the country reflects a steadfast commitment to the growth of rumba within the Caribbean archipelago.

Through a series of live performances, colloquiums, and music-and-dance workshops, Guaguancó Matancero seeks to inspire a passion for Afro-Cuban music among younger generations, noted Ramos, who also serves as the artistic director of Los Muñequitos de Matanzas.

Over the course of three days, this inaugural edition will bring together the most influential figures in the rumba scene from both Cuba and the international stage.
