Meliá Hotels International Cuba operates 36 hotels on the island with around 14,800 rooms in the most important tourist centers, including Havana, Varadero, Cayo Santa María and Cayo Coco. The first hotel to operate in the country was the Sol Palmeras hotel in Varadero, inaugurated by the historic leader Fidel Castro and the president of that Spanish chain, Gabriel Escarrer, in 1990.
