Neptune and Christ: two guards of Havana

Within Cuban environmental sculpture, different typologies stand out, such as statues, monuments and sculptural ensembles. In Havana, countless works of this art form stand tall, two of which are highly representative and recognized as symbols of the city: the Christ of Havana and the statue of Neptune.

The Neptune Fountain, currently located at the beginning of Avenida del Puerto, was sculpted in Carrara marble by Italian artists and located in Havana in the 19th century. Inside the monument, the Neptune statue is the most striking, made to a natural scale, whose realism impresses whoever contemplates it. In its right hand, Neptune carries a trident, a typical addition to the god of the seas in Greco-Roman mythology.

For its part, the Christ of Havana is a colossal 20-meter-high statue representing The Sacred Heart of Jesus, located in the town of Casa Blanca since 1958. Sculpture by the renowned Cuban artist Jilma Madera, it was made up of 67 pieces of Carrara marble and is located more than 50 meters above sea level. Its image can be seen from different points of the city.

Both sculptures flank the entrance to the port of Havana, which are guardians of the waters and the cultural and commercial exchange.

Two symbols of the Cuban capital that receive thousands of visitors, scholars and lovers of art, historical and heritage values that accompany and protect the soul of the city every day.
