The enactment of Law 179 on the Cuban Sports System, which took effect this Wednesday, provides a new legal framework to secure the future of physical activity and sports across the nation.
As the first legislation of its kind in Cuba, the law was approved by the National Assembly of People’s Power on July 18, 2025. Its primary objective is to strengthen the Cuban Sports System (SDC, by its Spanish acronym) both institutionally and legally.
Among the modern and transparent features of the law is the formal recognition and guarantee of specific rights for all SDC participants. Furthermore, it defines the roles that various economic and social actors may now play in the development of sporting activities.
The law establishes the legal channels necessary to consolidate one of the most defining hallmarks of the Cuban Revolution: the establishment of sport as a fundamental right of the people.
The document serves as a guarantor of the rights and duties of all stakeholders within the SDC. It integrates Cuba’s historical sporting experience while harmonizing it with international best practices and contemporary standards.
Beyond the document itself, the implementation of this law and its provisions represents a commitment to the future of physical activity and sports in the Caribbean archipelago, ensuring the nation remains in step with current global realities.
