Sancti Spíritus, the fourth town founded by the Spanish colonizers, celebrates this Tuesday its 510th anniversary with great joy and immerse in numerous activities for the enjoyment of all the population and its visitors.
The festivities began at the end of last month, with the sixth edition of the René de la Cruz in memoriam Theater Day –from May 31 to June 4–, also the 38th Colloquium of Spiritus Culture took place (June 3), among others activities in settings such as the garage of the Colonial Art Museum, the Serapio Café del Teatro Principal, the House of Musical Promotions and the Trova House. Also, the last days have served to inaugurate social projects, hold fairs, sporting events, acting of local artists, as well as guests from other cities of the country and culinary meetings.
The cultural artistic gala took place the day before, coinciding with the date it takes place the Solemn Session of the Assembly, during which awards and distinctions are granted to numerous personalities and entities.
In recent statements to Prensa Latina, the president of the Municipal Assembly of People´s Power in the fourth Cuban town, Bárbara Mínguez, highlighted the importance of that anniversary, which is evident when she declared that “Since the end of 2023 we have been dreaming how to celebrate the 510th anniversary, which promotes a material, economic and social transformation.”
Founded on June 4, 1514 by Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar on the banks of the Tuinucú River in the currently called town of Pueblo Viejo, about 8 kilometers from its present location, Sancti Spíritus was moved in 1522 to its current headquarters on the banks of the Yayabo River.
It is one of the heritage cities of Cuba with numerous historical places, including the bridge over the Yayabo River, the Mayor Parish Church and the Principal Theater, three jewels of the Colonial architecture.
