Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos will inaugurate the 23rd Central American and Caribbean Games in Barranquilla.
Sources from the presidency confirmed in this capital that the head of State will open the sports event, which will take place until August 3. 'Thanks for the effort that you have made for Colombia to be a sports power today,' Santos said at the ceremony to flag the national delegation to the games early this week. More than 5,000 athletes from 37 countries will compete for 3,220 gold, silver and bronze medals in dispute in Barranquilla, as well as in the cities of Cali, Calima and Bogota, the secondary venues of the event. For the fourth time, Colombia is hosting the Central American and Caribbean Games. In addition, it is the second time that the Atlantic capital holds the regional competitions. The first time was in 1946. The inauguration of the 23rd Central American and Caribbean Games is scheduled for 20:00 hours, local time.
