The Association for Peace and Solidarity of the Workers' Commissions of Asturias (CCOO) granted the Second International Award to Cuba's Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM).
Cubainformacion Editor Jose Manzaneda told Prensa Latina that the award was handed over at the Historical Museum of the Asturian city of Aviles, in northern Spain.
The CCOO pointed out that the award was founded to acknowledge and support non-profit organizations whose work is committed to international cooperation and take actions to reduce inequalities, defend workers’ human rights, and build peace and global justice.
In the case of Cuba’s ELAM, the award was given “due to its work in training, free of charge, physicians from more than 100 countries to create or continue healthcare programs in their countries.”
ELAM Rector Yoandra Muro Valle received the award from the Association’s president, Professor Ana Mari Garcia, and CCOO Secretary General in Asturias Jose Manuel Zapico.
The event was part of the Cultural Week in Aviles prior to May Day festivities.
