The vegueros of this central-eastern province of Cuba have a commitment this year to supply more than 80 tons of tobacco layers for the manufacture of habanos for export.
According to Luis Perdomo, Production Manager of Florencia Agricultural Company, Ciego de Avila aspires to remain in second place in Cuba, in the contribution of quality leaves for the manufacture of cigars, only surpassed by Pinar del Rio. In the current tobacco season, some 634 hectares (ha) were planted in this territory, 456 ha with the 'covered ' method and the rest of the sun on a stick, which are attended by 545 vegueros scattered throughout the ten municipalities. Perdomo pointed out that at the moment they have hired some 740 ha for the next tobacco harvest, whose sowing will begin next August.
