Cuban tourist authorities are considering a wide investment program with the aim to enhance the tourist activity in the Canarreos, a region located at the west south of this country. 

The tourism representative in the southern municipality of Isla de la Juventud, Alexander Dominguez said to the Agencia Cubana de Noticias (Cuban news agency), that an example of this proposal is Cayo Largo del Sur, the second largest island in The Canarreos archipelago. 

An intense work is carries out in that place with the aim to expand the hotel capacities which is around 1 338 rooms in this moment, the authorities planning to finish this year with 1 376; in the meantime, another group of rooms have been renovated to increase their comfort and standards. 

Investments in Villa Iguana, last facility added to this tourist destination should also be finished, where 162 cabins of 200 conceived in the project, which is still in constructive phase, are already marketed, explained the Gran Caribe hotel group’s marketing manager, Livan Hernandez. 

He specified that this Villa is the only adult’s accommodation, and due to the high quality of its services, has been one of the most required for two years, recording occupancy rates of 90 percent, meanly of Canadian tourists, main source of vacationers toward Cayo Largo del Sur. 

Likewise, to the structural improvements in the hotels Iberostar Playa Blanca and Sol Cayo, it adds the constructive works in another 60 rooms whose standard will be five star. 

A new Laundromat as well as repair activities in staff’s housing buildings which help to improve their living conditions are among the investment actions to favor a season 2018-2019 with higher profits. 

In the Isla de la Juventud destination, are working to encourage the attention to the cruise arrivals, tourist modality on the rise which includes visits in the capital city, Nueva Gerona, to the Presidio Modelo museum, the boulevard, and to the public health care system, as well as to improve the quality standards of the Colony, Rancho el Tesoro and Villa Isla hotels.
