Deborah tosses a few coins into the depths of the ocean calling for the protection of Yemaya, the Afro-Cuban goddess of the sea. She asks for permission to enter her domain and to return victorious. She takes some mouthfuls of air and with the last and deepest one she starts her dive towards a new world record.
Baseball began to be played in Cuba a short time after it was created in the U. S. halfway through the 19th century. Most historians agree that the very first game was played in June 19, 1846 with the New York Nines trouncing the Knickerbockers by a score of 23 to 1.
Sports Stevenson Greatest among the Great By Héctor Miranda Photos: Prensa Latina Three Olympic gold medals and several world titles turned the Cuban heavyweight Teófilo Stevenson into the greatest amateur boxer of all time.
In the recent olympics held in Rio de Janeiro, Cuban boxing, having won five gold and three bronze medals, surpassed its performance of London-2012 and fulfilled the commitment that the team had previously set.
Every March 15th since 1988 Cubans run at more than four thousand locations, symbolically remembering young Canadian Terry Fox. Terry began the historic Marathon of Hope on November 12th , 1980 to raise funds for cancer research, running thousands of miles in 143 consecutive days.
Beginning in February, and continuing for approximately ten months, drivers from different countries race the Cocomar circuit near EI Salado beach in Havana. Several categories, including one for children, race the class A (International Kart Federation standard) 1 218 meter circuit.

When the Cuban women's volleyball team defeated Brazil 3-2 in the final of the recent Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, they revived the belief of their fans who dreamt of their return to glory that they had a decade ago when they were known as the "Spectacular Caribbean Mulatto Girls."
