La Guabina farm, in the western province of Pinar del Río, is renowned for its beautiful cuban pinto horses, but this place is much more than a place for breeding horses, it is also an excellent option for nature tourism, part of the Equine Genetic Farms of the Flora and Fauna Business Group.
Regarding the cuban pinto horse, it is a descendant of the North American pinto horse. They were brought to Cuba in the 40’s and 50’s by Cuban and North American landowners, who were mainly concentrated in the central areas of Camagüey and Sancti Spíritus.
La Guabina, at km 9 of the Luis Lazo Highway and a short distance from the famous Viñales mogotes, includes several facilities designed for lodging in a comfortable house with five rooms and three independent cabins. The beautiful residence is surrounded by a lake that forms the waters of the Guamá River, and still preserves much of the colonial style with which it was conceived, inviting you to dine with your family among its furniture made from precious woods and waiting to taste the steaming black beans of María Antonia and a delicious mutton stew accompanied by homemade sweets and natural fruits.
Between pine forests and the Mirador del Guamá are trails that, on foot or on horseback, take visitors on a tour that allow them to appreciate landscapes formed by valleys and gentle hills where herds of horses graze peacefully with birds, fragments of pine forests and other plants native to the area such as guayabita del pinar (a variety of guava), from which the national drinks industry prepares a rum with Pinar del Río’s seal of exclusivity. Very popular among Cuban clients is the day excursion, which offers boat rentals, horseback riding, bathing in the Guamá River and lunch. For different events, the typical ranchón can be rented near the lake, with a buffet of Creole food.
Photography enthusiasts can capture incredible images of horses grazing in the morning in the local valleys and gentle hills. For those who like reflection photos, we recommend a boat ride on the lake that surrounds the lodge, in the afternoons a great place to capture some splendid snapshots to share with friends.
Visiting La Guabina is undoubtedly another attractive and healthy way to enjoy Cuban nature.
