Each year, nature tourism, adventure travel, and rural experiences gain greater popularity around the world, and Cuba is no exception to this trend that attracts many people and even families.
The idea is to connect with nature and take part in activities that allow for active vacations, which can easily be combined with sun and beach stays, mountain excursions, and recreational nautical activities, among other options.
For that reason, the canopy or zipline experience has become part of current tourism trends both globally and in Cuba.
The western and central regions of the island have embraced this activity, which allows visitors to capture aerial photos and videos of truly beautiful landscapes while also enjoying an adrenaline filled experience.
Although Cuba’s main travel motivation continues to be its beaches, the country has diversified its tourism offerings with cultural visits, business travel, congresses, nature tourism, nautical activities, and adventure experiences.
Within that context, three locations in Cuba have been established for canopy activities, the most recent one in the central province of Sancti Spíritus, in the Valley of the Sugar Mills. This adds value to the area, which UNESCO has recognized as a World Heritage Site.
Opened in 2017, it features five lines of different lengths, the longest reaching 350 meters. Together they total 1.2 kilometers and reach a height of 50 meters.
In the western region, two other stations had already been operating earlier. One is located in the province of Pinar del Río in the Viñales Valley, and the other in the province of Artemisa in the community of Las Terrazas.
The Viñales zipline, located within a Cultural Landscape of Humanity, is set in an environment filled with trees. It even allows children over the age of twelve, depending on their physical condition, to ride together with an instructor in tandem.
This aerial route, established in 2015, stretches for one kilometer divided into four sections with eight platforms, where five instructors are responsible for assisting visitors.
The zipline at Las Terrazas, the oldest in the country, is located within an area of the Sierra del Rosario Biosphere Reserve. Surrounded by lush landscapes, its aerial cable extends for 1.6 kilometers and offers impressive views of forests, a lake, and the community itself.
Because of the beauty of its landscapes and the welcoming natural surroundings, this form of recreation and tourism finds ideal settings in Cuba, allowing visitors to admire attractive environments from above and in constant motion.
