A team of specialists from the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), Guyana, this week successfully performed its first laparoscopic nephrectomy of a donor, the surgical removal of a kidney, a transformative procedure that marks a significant advance in transplant surgery of that organ in the country.
According to a statement from that institution, Laparoscopic donor nephrectomy, was carried out on a person who selflessly contributed her kidney to a 17-year-old male relative, who had been battling chronic kidney failure attributed to Diabetes type 1.
The transplant has been a resounding success and the kidney is working exceptionally well, since the patient has not had additional need for dialysis, which demonstrates the effectiveness of the procedure to restore kidney health. Laparoscopic nephrectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure, through which the removal of the kidney (nephrectomy) is carried out, without the need to resort to open surgery. This important achievement is the result of the collaborative efforts of the vascular team and transplants, who worked perfectly with the general surgery, anesthesia and nursing, which ensured a comprehensive and well-coordinated effort that contributed to the success of the surgical intervention.
Dr. Kishore Persaud, lead surgeon of the innovative procedure, highlighted the importance for the institution it represents, for the results achieved with that procedure, which It enables, among other benefits for the patient, a faster recovery.
In the statement, the GPHC also commits to continuing to expand laparoscopic procedures, which reiterates the unwavering dedication of that hospital institution to maintain a leadership position in medical advances and provide top-level healthcare services, while setting a promising precedent for the future of kidney transplant surgeries in Guyana.
